Choose a save format, then check the saved result
Choose for the task you will do later: quote a passage, review a layout, or reread a page. The file extension is a starting point; the saved result is what you need to check.
Written by the Aurora Scrap development team. This is general guidance, not a test report for a particular site. The checklist is plain text for you to fill in; it does not run tests or score files automatically.
1. Start with the intended use
PDF — reading, printing and sharing
Try PDF when you need a document. Open the saved PDF, inspect page breaks and tables, and select and copy a sentence if quoting text matters. A visible sentence is not proof that its text can be selected. Safari extension capture does not support PDF; use a supported desktop capture route when you need it.
PNG — checking the layout
Try PNG when the visual arrangement matters. Enlarge the image and check small labels and the bottom of the page. A screenshot is an image, not selectable document text. JPG is also available when you prefer a compressed image; check readability in the resulting file.
SingleFile HTML — rereading page content
Try SingleFile HTML for a page saved as one HTML file. Open that saved file and check the required text and images. A saved button or player can look correct without working. MHTML is another available archive format; test it in the viewer you intend to use.
2. Prepare the part you need
Open a page you are allowed to save. Show the relevant section and note any sign-in state, expanded panels, or content loaded after scrolling. Record the source URL and date. These preparations do not guarantee that dynamic content will be captured. You can select more than one supported format and check each result separately.
3. Check the file, not the original browser tab
- Open the saved result and compare the beginning, middle and end of the required content with the source.
- Check important images, tables, captions and small text. Mark missing or unreadable parts.
- Test the task: copy a sentence from the PDF, enlarge the PNG, or read the needed text and images in the HTML.
- If offline reading matters, reopen the saved file without a network connection when safe for your other work. Note what remains available, then restore the connection.
- Record pass, needs another save, or not checked for each requirement. Keep the original URL and unresolved gaps in the scrap memo.
4. If something is missing
Try another supported format for that specific requirement and check again. For example, a PNG may help inspect a layout while a PDF may help with printing; neither proves the other succeeded. Login-only content, scripts, video and external resources may be absent or still need a connection. Complete offline playback or page functionality is not guaranteed. Respect access restrictions and sharing rights.
